Asbestosis - What is it?
Asbestosis often results from significant exposure to asbestos fibres, with effects usually appearing 20 or more years after exposure. Symptoms include coughing and breathlessness and in more extreme cases, respiratory failure and death. Asbestosis often leads to sufferers being more susceptible to lung cancer, mesothelioma and disabling diffuse pleural thickening. Where a cancer develops, it is much more difficult to treat than in the absence of asbestosis.
Mesothelioma - What is it?
Mesothelioma is a cancer which could have been caused by asbestos exposure more than 10-15 years ago. Beyond that period, even as far back as 40 years ago, it will be held that any period of exposure within that time could have caused mesothelioma.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss - What is it?
Where a person has been exposed to high levels of noise over a prolonged period as a result of their working environment, they may suffer from noise induced hearing loss.
Typical industries where this may occur can include mining, textiles and engineering. People affected could include factory workers, steel workers, saw mill workers and road workers. Ear protection wasn't traditionally issued or may have been inadequate to protect against noise damage.
Hearing loss from prolonged exposure to noise is usually gradual and once your hearing has been damaged there is little hope of a cure. Because the hearing loss is gradual, people can be unaware of the severity of the hearing loss until it combines with hearing loss due to ageing. Sufferers of noise induced hearing loss report difficulty in social situations, in particular when there is background noise.
