Progress in personal injury: cold-calling claims firms raided Posted Jan 05, 2018. In a move welcomed by the team here at Bakers Solicitors and no doubt by all dedicated professionals who help to properly run personal injury claims in the UK, a recent series of raids by the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has revealed a network of unscrupulous Claims Management Companies (CMC’s) in the Nottingham area. As part of an ongoing campaign to identify, target and bring to book rogue personal injury CMC’s who flout the clear rules in place that regulate their activities, ICO investigators and enforcement officers raided two locations in Nottingham. A spokesperson for the ICO stated that the CMC network they targeted may have been responsible for a huge number – maybe in the hundreds of millions - of unwanted and unauthorised automated calls. ICO enforcement group manager, Andy Curry, said: “People are sick and tired of receiving nuisance calls. The evidence we had already gathered prior to these warrants suggests this network, operating both in the UK and overseas, is responsible for making hundreds of millions of them… we hope the material we have now recovered will help identify other organisations and individuals in a lengthy and complex investigation, and assist the ICO and our partners in taking enforcement action” The ICO raids were carried out in conjunction with Nottinghamshire Police and the Claims Management Regulator, and a variety of computer equipment and documents were seized for future analysis. As well as the illegal personal injury marketing activity, the Claims Management Regulator is also investigating potential breaches of the 2006 Compensation Act.
